Mikawa Shiro Nagura

Premium-Plus 4 Piece Set - Botan, Tenjyou, Mejiro and Koma

Here’s a tested and matched 4-piece set of Asano Stamped
 Mikawa Shiro Nagura.

This is a complete set of Botan, Tenjyou, Mejiro and Koma.
These 4 stones have have been used/tested repeatedly on a good number of stones
with 4-5 different razors; they’ve work exceedingly well together in a razor
 honing progression.

The ‘Premium-Plus' designation is my own – I use it to
classify matched sets of the larger stones that weigh around 200 g. While the smaller Nagura can have the same
performance qualities, I find the larger stones easier to hold, handle and work
with. These larger stones are cut from higher quality stock for professional/commercial
 use.

The stamps have been sealed and protected with 2 coats of
 clear lacquer.

Botan, Betsu Ju – 234 g / Fast stone with slightly granular
 feedback.

Tenjyou, Tokkyuu – 205 g / Medium speed with a silky pasty
 feel; very fine.

Mejiro, Tokkyuu – 218 g / Slow stone, textured pasty under
 the blade; very fine.

Koma, Betsu Ju – 198 g / Fast, textured feel at first, gets
 silky quickly. Very old stone.

Premium 3 Piece Nagura Set

This matched 3-piece set of Asano Stamped Mikawa Shiro
Botan, Tenjyou and Mejiro Nagura have been tested repeatedly and regularly
across the last 6 months; they’ve work exceedingly well together in a razor
 honing progression.

The ‘Premium’ designation is my own – I use it to classify
matched sets of the larger stones that weigh around 150 g. While the smaller 60/70 g Nagura can have the
same performance qualities, I find the larger stones easier to hold, handle and

but this is a subjective point and impossible to prove.

Each stone’s top

Typically – I’ll configure a set of Asano Stamped Mikawa
Shiro Nagura so they all play well together, and then I’ll spend some time
finding a Tomo that not only loves the Awasedo, but follows the Koma in the
Nagura-set well. It is a bit of a puzzle to figure out sometimes, but it’s a
fun part of honing with Jnats that I love.

Matched and Sealed Nagura Set

Botan, Tenjyou, Mejiro and Tomo Nagura.

The tops and sides have been sealed with Cashew Lacquer.

Botan: 5.4 oz / 154 g

All white Botan Nagura seem to be quite scarce. I’ve set more than a few bevels using slurry from this one - it’s a primo piece that’s large enough to last several lifetimes.

Tenjyou - 4.5 oz /129 g

All white - which is a rarity these days. It’s a larger piece too. Like the Mejiro, it produces slurry with some of the granular and pasty feedback.

Mejiro - 5.3 oz / 150 g

This is a larger and very fine Mejiro that can be used to finish with easily. The slurry has some of that pasty sensation which I like but there is also some of the granular feedback too. It’s a beautiful stone that is marbled and striped.

Tomo - 8.6 oz / 243 g

This is a fairly hard and rather large chunk of Nakayama Kiita. It’s unusually hard for a Kiita Tomo, but not super hard. The slurry is very fine with good speed and it keeps on going for a very very long time. On top, you can see, faintly, some sort of Jyun stamp which is fairly unusual on a Tomo Nagura. The bottom is rounded and the Suji lines are completely safe. I just shaved with a wedge that was finished on slurry from this Tomo - all I can say is ‘wow’ - the edge is absolutely spectacular.
