Lapping a Jnat

Lapping the Top of a Jnat.

I lap in the sink under running water. I usually start of using a 220x/325x DMT plate to clear the bulk of the material off. First, with a pencil, I’ll draw a grid pattern on the stone. When that’s lapped clear I may opt to repeat that process one or two more times.

In this photo – I’ve transitioned to using w/d sandpaper. This is the first stage and I’m using 220x; it’s gentler on the stone than a DMT and it still removes material fairly quickly. During this stage – I will take off all of the scratches left by the disparate diamonds in the DMT, so the top will be perfectly flat and smooth. After this – I will progress to 320x, then 600x, and after that I may move to 1k or I’ll just use another Jnat or a large Nagura to polish the top a bit more.
