Norton 6x2 Trans 1

 Norton Translucent Arkansas Stone

Box date: 1953

This one appears to be NOS - untouched and probably from the mid 1950s. Both sides are lapped dead-flat too. There is one section that appears to be yellowing; I’ve seen this before in vintage Arkansas stones and I always assumed it was from oil soaking into it. This stone has not been used; and the yellowish coloring doesn’t cover the whole stone or even the entire side it’s on. It’s been said that Translucent stones with this yellowing are highly sought after because they are allegedly finer than others.

The box is labeled ‘Hard Arkansas’ because this stone was packaged long before the term ‘Translucent’ was being used. In the old says - Arks were either ‘Soft’ or ‘Hard’.

Most definitely, this stone qualifies for the title ‘Translucent’ - it transmits light very well and it feels as smooth and dense as any I’ve owned or used.

Approx. Dimensions: 6.0 x 2.0 x 1.0 / 152 x 51 x 25 mm
