 Narutaki Asagi Namazu Honzan

Looks can be deceiving; this one is fairly quiet looking, but it’s very hard and very fine.   It’s in ‘that’ level of hardness that I love; a bit difficult to work with, but delivers the goods when you ‘get it’.

The top is rectangular, but it’s not shaped ‘perfectly’. It’s a little on the thin side, but not precariously so. The bottom shows some skin, but it's a little rough; it sits flat with just the slightest tinge of wobble. The edges show prominent saw marks, which are possibly from the old type of saws used long ago.

So – what’s the deal with this thin slice of Asagi?

Well – it’s a killer razor finisher. And that’s all there is to it.

This is a very hard stone, and you can get ‘those’ edges if you put in the time to learn how to coax out its full potential. The lack of vertical dimension means nothing; this stone is hard enough to last several lifetimes for a straight razor user.

Perfect for use with a full Nagura progression, or just as a finishing stone with water or slurry laps – either way, it’s all good on this stone.
