I believe this razor, stamped ‘Huntsman’ on the tang, is from the mid 1700s.
Until the late 1700s, and early 1800s, razor manufacturers stamped tangs with the type of steel they used. The practice of putting the makers name on the tang came later. Because of this, I am inclined to think this razor was manufactured in France, from steel made by the inventor of ‘Cast Steel’, Benjamin Huntsman. However, there is some possibility that this razor was manufactured by Benjamin Huntsman using his own steel.
The scales appear to be made of horn. The pins are, most likley, original. The wedge is all but gone, but the pin there is solid and keeping the razors together nicely. The grind is, typicallly, a wedge type, and the width is approximately 11/16” at its widest point.
The stone is a Coticule, and it was found bundled alongside this razor.
