Apache Red

Apache Red 1

The Apache Red Whetstone

Here’s the Apache red, which is the second whetstone variant from Naturalhones.com. When wet, the color is so vibrant that it almost looks like the stone was dyed or something. This is a hard dense stone that’s a little thirsty. Raising slurry doesn’t happen immediately but it’s not so slow that it’s problematic.

The feedback on this one is odd – a little gritty to be honest. The funny part is that the gritty feeling has nothing to do with what’s going on. There is no edge/bevel annihilation going on – on the contrary, this is an effective stone that produces are nice upper pre-finish register edge. I can shave off this stone, but the Apache Strata hone takes the edge further so there’s no point. I see this stone as a perfect mid-range option to use after a bevel setter and before the Apache Strata.
