Nakayama Asagi

Maruka Asagi 1

Nakayama Maruka Asagi

This stone is amazing – it is, without a doubt, the hardest and finest stone I’ve ever worked with. If there was a LV 6, this would be a LV 6+. When I got it, there was a Maruka stamp on top. Many have said that Hatanaka only put Maruka stamps on the ends of stones. However, this stone had no flat ends to stamp. Maruka or not, I didn’t buy this for the stamp. The owner praised it highly and he was spot on.

The flat end visible in the photo was created when I cut that section off to make a Tomo Nagura. I think it took 45 minutes with a hacksaw to get through that cut.

This stone is so hard, that it’s own Tomo doesn’t raise enough slurry in a reasonable amount of time.

It’s a fairly large Koppa, and very dense and heavy.  While many super hard stones are just too-hard end-cuts that sell for cheap, this is a very high-class stone with good speed and feedback; the resulting finished edges are absolutely spectacular. The sides and bottom are sealed in clear lacquer.

Water only laps are very difficult to execute. Ninja status is required for such events.
