Carborundum 118s

Carbo 118s 1

Carborundum 118s Barber Hone

The Carborundum 118s seems to be coarser and softer than the #100-103 hones. Out of the box, I’d rate this significantly lower in ‘grit’ – around 4k.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t a usefule hone though. My first attempts to use this during shaving failed miserably – but when I use it as a set-up stone for a finer barber hone it’s extremely useful.

What I believe is that this stone needs to be soaked in a hot Vaseline bath. The instructions with Carborundum hones mention this approach as a means to reduce cutting strength and that could very well be the trick to tame this little beast. I didn’t want to experiment with this one here, it’s the only one I have. Eventually I’ll pick up another one and give the Vaseline treatment a whirl.

For now – I’m designating this one to be used as the start point for those blades that can’t be completely revived by a finer stone.

Approx. Dimensions: 4.0 x 2.0 x .75 / 102 x 50 x 19 mm
