Carborundum #201 Barber Hone
This is a very cool two sided Barber Hone from the Carborundum Company. One side is made out of Silicon Carbide, like the rest of their b-hone line. The other side is made out of Aloxite, which I have to assume is Aluminum Oxide.
What I find interesting is that the directions for use are different for wet and dry use. I only use these hones wet – and it seems to me that how the surfaces are lapped has a lot to do with how fine the finished edge is. I have to do more testing with this one; right now I’d say the Aloxite is finer; a couple of passes on the Silicon Carbide side followed by a few more on the Aloxite surface yielded a nicer edge than just using either side individually.
The 201 may prove to be the most versatile of all the Carborundum brand barber hones.
