Nubatama Ume 18ox

This is a very nice and somewhat old 60mm Kanna blade, but it has been used heavily and neglected. The edge wasn’t square; I’m guessing it was off around 3˚. The back isn’t flat so that has to be dealt with also. The steel is quite good, and worth the effort. I’ve pulled the edge back on one side to make it ‘sort of ‘ square. Next I’ll get the back trued up; that is going to be a bit of boring work but once that’s done the rest of the job should go comparatively quickly.

The stone is a Nubatama Ume Arato – 180x. It’s a thirsty stone that cuts fast but it’s also very smooth. I run water right onto the end of the stone throughout the process; this way, I don’t have to soak the stone for 30 minutes first and it really helps to keep the swarf from clogging the stone.
